Currency in Fiji? What is the best way to go about it?

Hi, Going to Fiji in a couple of days for business. We are staying in a resort and everything is paid for except for spending money and personal items. Are visa cards readily accepted, or am I best converting some cash at the Sydney airport before we leave. We have been told you can put money on a cash passport and then just withdraw that at any atm, but am not sure if this applies to Fiji. Can anybody help

Lucky you, going to Fiji.

The money won’t be an issue – we often don’t exchange into Fiji dollars at all – but if we do, there is an ANZ Bank ATM machine at the airport in Nadi that accepts our cash machine card so we get a much better rate than a currency exchange kiosk. If you are going to take a taxi or want to buy snacks at a small grocery store, you will want some local currency – otherwise, you might do just fine without it.

We’ve never had a problem using VISA at resorts and most places also take AMEX – and we’re often at very small resorts on remote islands. If you are at a large resort or on the main island, you won’t have any trouble at all.

There isn’t much to buy in Fiji – the shopping in downtown Nadi is nothing to get excited about. I have heard there are some shops at Denarau but I’ve never been there. If you can, try to get off the main island (Viti Levu) to some of the smaller islands. It’s a whole different feel – and the water is crystal clear for snorkeling/diving. (Near Nadi the beaches are muddy/murky from runoff and the mangrove swamps.)

Be sure to take lots of mosquito repellent – and any over the counter drugs you might need. We always take cold remedies, antibiotic ointment, aspirin or Tylenol, and a few band-aids. Imodium is also a good idea to take.

Have a wonderful time – and hope this helps!
