Recommendations for island hopping in Greece?
I want to go on a vacation to Greece sometime fairly soon – probably late August / early September.
I was thinking of starting out in Athens for a couple of nights, and then taking a ferry to an island or three, for a total of around 9-10 days. I am a single, straight, 22-year-old male American. My main goal is to relax and not do too much. I am not a big fan of the nightlife scene, but would want to at least check it out a little bit. If there are any fairly quiet islands(that still have bars, English-speaking people, and great beaches, they would be great for at least part of my stay. Otherwise, I’m thinking along the lines of Ios or Mykonos, and just going to some of the quieter beaches and whatnot during the day.
Can someone please provide some recommendations for specific island(s) to visit that would fit my needs, and maybe some tips for reserving hotels and ferry/plane rides? Thanks!
I just came back from Greece a couple of moths ago and i visited Naxos and Amorgos island. i fell in love with both of them. Naxos is quiet but still has tons of English speaking tourists. We rented a car and drove around the whole island and the view was just breathtaking. There are many little historical sites on the island and we visited a little town called Apollonis which has a great beach and great little cafes. When you arrive there by ferry there are tons of people standing around offering you to stay at their hotel and you can bargain with them and see who will give you the cheapest price. We stayed at a hotel called “Hotel Panorama” which was just beautiful and allows access to the roof from which you can look out at the endless Aegean. Amorgos is very quiet and tranquil and does not have many english speaking tourists or bars but if you are looking for a couple of days just for yourself I would highly recommend it. The locals there are so sweet. There is a beach that we drove to ( unfortunately i can’t remember the name) but it was the most amazing beach and one of the best experiences of my life. There were close to no people when we got there which made the experience that much more terrific. There were caves close by to which you can swim to and into it was an experience like no other. The ferry ride from pireus to naxos is 7 hours and from naxos to amorgos about 2 hours. Its quiet far but it was so worth it. I didn’t like Athens all that much to tell you the truth. It doesn’t compare to the islands whatsoever and I couldn’t wait to get away from it. Hope you have a fun vacation, Greece is definately one of the most amazing places in the world !
