Is it possible to go island hopping in Greece in August without having previously booked accommodation?
I’m thinking of getting a flight to greece with my girlfriend this summer and would like to know if it’s possible to find hoteles or hostals on the islands in high season. How much can we expect to pay for a basic double room?
It’s possible, and certainly cheaper if you’re on a budget. Up until before I had kids, our holiday planning was as follows. Go to Piraeus, find out which ship was the first to depart, hop on. We never knew beforehand what the destination would be, which made it a lot of fun. When the ship would dock, we would find the pier crowded with reps trying to find customers to fill their rooms. Its easy to haggle and get a good rate. I’ve never not found a room myself, but I do know that it happens occasionally on the most popular destinations like Myconos and Santorini. In Myconos though, you could always head out to Paradise beach where they have camping.
BTW. Nowadays, due to new safety regulations, you have buy a ticket before boarding a ship.
Like I mentioned, it’s been some time since I’ve done this myself, but last year I went to Mylos and Paros. Both are quite popular destinations, and I can verify that there were reps crowded at the pier again, looking for people to fill up their rooms. As the 2 guys below state though (and as I mentioned myself), there;s always an element of risk involved. You may have to rough it for one or two nights in a worst case scenario.
