Why was Bougainville made part of Papua New Guinea?
because:
A. the people did not want independence, fearing takeover by the soloman islands
B. of the much-needed revenues its copper mines would bring to PNG
C. it is the geographically closest to Papua New Guinea
D. indonesia felt that such an arrangement would allow them to continue to dominat the area
It has always been in PNG ever since the colonial times and not part of Soloman Islands. Though, geographically it is closer to Soloman Islands.
‘The people did not want independence’, from whom ? From PNG ? Except that period of insurgency it has been part of PNG. But with an asset like ‘Copper’ mines under its soil, several international interests (vested or otherwise) will play politics. Modern history is replete with such things. In the last century, Copper rich ‘Katanga’ province’s attempted break-away from nascent ‘Congo’ (DR Congo) rep. is too famous because it claimed the life of the then UN Secretary-General ‘Dag Hammerskjeold’. It is the perversion of ‘Democracy’ that masquerades on such occasions to the detriment of weak and under-developed nations projected as ‘oppressors’. A way should be found to unmask such perversions as UN itself is vulnerable.
