How were maps of the world made long ago?
I’ve seen several maps from millenias ago and I am amazed at how accurate they rendered the landmasses, islands, and overall structure of the present day countries. My question is, how did they manage to do this? Did they go to the border of all the lands to decide where it ends and how big it is? Or did they use some other method? Or were the maps a combination of smaller maps?
For example, a map of Herodotus:

Herodotus was a BEAST, that’s how he was so accurate.
I think that they used some form of measurement to figure out distances and then they gathered information about those distances and land forms from explorers and sea-farers. Honestly, I don’t know for sure.
